Global Chess League Day 5: Sindarov Powers Gambits to the Top
The race for the Global Chess League Season 4 title became even tighter on Day 5 as the FYERS American Gambits moved to the top of the standings. The Gambits defeated the Triveni Continental Kings 8-5 in their second match of the day, while Alpine APL Pipers defeated CheQ Mumba Masters 11-6.
Ganges Grandmasters also produced a massive 15-3 victory over Triveni, while the PBG Alaskan Knights defeated Mumba 11-6.By the end of the day, three teams were tied on 12 match points.
Sindarov Continues His Incredible Run
Once again, Javokhir Sindarov was at the centre of the Gambits' success. The young Uzbek star had already defeated Viswanathan Anand earlier in the tournament. On Day 5, he produced another important victory, defeating Alireza Firouzja.
The win proved crucial because the rest of the Gambits-Triveni match was extremely close. Sindarov's victory was the difference-maker and helped the Gambits move to the top of the table.
His performances were becoming one of the defining stories of the tournament. Sindarov had already shown that he could compete on the Icon board, and he was rapidly becoming the player the Gambits could rely on when they needed a decisive result.
Alpine Stay in the Hunt
The Alpine APL Pipers continued their strong campaign with an 11-6 victory over the CheQ Mumba Masters.
Magnus Carlsen remained a major factor for the defending champions, while the rest of the team continued to collect important points. The victory took Alpine to 12 match points, level with FYERS and Ganges, although Alpine had played one fewer match than the Gambits.
That difference would become extremely important in the days ahead.
Ganges Destroy Triveni
The Ganges Grandmasters produced one of the biggest team performances of the day. They defeated Triveni Continental Kings 15-3, winning five of the six boards while drawing the remaining game. After a slow start to the tournament, Ganges had suddenly become a serious contender.
Their combination of Ian Nepomniachtchi, Levon Aronian, Leinier Dominguez Perez and a strong supporting cast was beginning to produce results.
Knights Fight Back
The PBG Alaskan Knights also kept their hopes alive with an 11-6 victory over Mumba Masters.
The Knights had struggled for consistency during the opening days, but this result moved them to nine match points. With only a few rounds remaining, they could not afford another slip.
