Who Is Faustino Oro? The Rise of the World's Youngest Current Grandmaster

The chess world has a new reigning wonderkid. Argentine prodigy Faustino Oro - affectionately dubbed "Chessi" by Gary Kasparov has officially been awarded the Grandmaster (GM) title by FIDE.

While Oro, currently aged 12 years and 10 months, completed his final playing requirements at the Sardinia World Chess Festival, FIDE formally ratified his application during their latest Council meeting, solidifying one of the most remarkable rises in modern chess history.

Oro qualified for the title in dramatic fashion in Sardinia. Needing a 6/9 score, his final-round pairing against two-time World Championship challenger Ian Nepomniachtchi guaranteed him the final required GM performance norm regardless of the game's outcome.

With this official ratification, Oro surpasses former record-holder Sergey Karjakin and trails only American GM Abhimanyu Mishra (who set the all-time mark at 12 years, 4 months, and 25 days in 2021).

Dominating Online & Defeating World Champions, Oro’s strength extends far beyond classical over-the-board play. Oro recently crossed the 3300 blitz rating threshold on Chess.com, placing him among the top 10 on the global leaderboard alongside elite grandmasters.
