Tania Sachdev is one of India’s most accomplished and recognized chess players, known for her consistent excellence on the global stage and her contribution to promoting the sport across the country. As a Woman Grandmaster (WGM) and International Master (IM), she has played a significant role in elevating Indian women’s chess over the past two decades.
Born on August 20, 1986, in Delhi, India, Tania started playing chess at the age of six. She was introduced to the game by her mother, and her talent was soon identified by her early coaches. She quickly rose through the ranks in the national circuit and began representing India at international tournaments from a young age.
Tania achieved her Woman Grandmaster title in 2005, and by 2008, she had also earned the International Master title. Her list of achievements includes winning the National Women's Premier Chess Championship multiple times and securing a bronze medal at the Women's Asian Individual Chess Championship in 2007. She was also part of the Indian team that won a bronze medal at the 2022 Chess Olympiad in Chennai. Beyond the board, she has served as a popular chess commentator and presenter, especially during major events like the World Chess Championship and the FIDE Grand Prix.
Her playing style is aggressive and tactical, often catching opponents off guard with unexpected moves. She has played a key role in changing the perception of chess in India, especially for young girls aspiring to take up the game professionally. Apart from her sports career, Tania holds a degree in English literature and balances her intellectual pursuits with an active media presence.
